In the past I have discussed, briefly , the benefits of laser therapy. The previous article addressed the level 3 laser, which is an incredible healing tool. I have seen amazing results in the past 7 years, not only with pain relief, but in wound healing. This year I have moved up the ladder and have invested in a level 4 laser. What we have here ,I am beginning to realize, is absolutely amazing in it’s ability to heal the body. This is the laser that has been so popular with the professional sports teams such as the N.F.L. and the N.B.A. After working with this tool for the past 6 weeks I now understand why. I have seen acute injuries act as if they never occurred, after just one treatment. I have seen chronic pain improve dramatically in following the protocols of twice weekly for 6-10 weeks or completely resolve !
I am so delighted to be able to offer this new therapy to my patients and at an affordable price. Pain relief is priceless-we know this. I have suffered from chronic pain for years myself and a modality such as this can give you your life back. How does it work ? It works much like the level 3, but it is stronger and goes deeper. It works by flooding the tissues with photons, energizing the damaged cells and increasing circulation to the painful area. this produces a cascade of healing responses in your body, reducing inflammation and eliminating pain. Treatments take only minutes and used in conjunction with acupuncture and massage I am astounded by the results we are seeing. I feel like Harry Potter with my magic wand.
If you have an acute injury call us immediately for a consultation. If you have been in pain for a long time with no relief or hope left-guess what ? There is an answer !!!!
Call today !!!

Many of my patients have asked me why I am going. I think they deserve an answer and I thank them for asking. What it has done for me is this-it has made me look deep within -self inquiry and introspection are very important. I remember sitting frozen in front of the T.V. the day of the earthquake, watching and crying without ceasing for hours, wondering what I could do to help the suffering of these poor people. I felt so helpless. I wanted to leave for Haiti as soon as possible. As a Trauma Nurse and with all the experiences I have had, I knew I could be a valuable member of a team to help these people in crisis.
But then all the questions began-How could I leave my practice? Who would I go with? How would I get there?
Where was the money I would need to go? Reality set in and I let it go. Three days later as I am doing my qi gong practice a voice out of “nowhere”, said,”Susan, you are going to Haiti”. I stopped my practice, looked at my partner and said,” honey I am going to Haiti”. I applied with numerous organizations and got no results. Ok, time to look at this again. If Spirit really wanted me to go, surely an opportunity would have presented itself. Did I only imagine that voice? Was it wishful thinking and nothing more? My backpack was packed and ready to go. Days passed and I finally realized that I needed to unpack. I put it all away and put my energy into making money for Partners In Health. I knew what great work they were doing in Haiti. When A.W.B. called I could hardly believe it, not only was I going to Haiti, but I was being given the opportunity to practice not” Western medicine”, but my own Medicine. This is what Spirit must have wanted all along. I give thanks to all the many Doctors and Nurses who went to Haiti. Many lives were saved thanks to these brave and wonderful people! What this has made me realize is that as I celebrate my 10th year in alternative medicine ,this really is what I do best now and this is indeed what I need to be doing in Haiti. Yes, I am proud to have once been a servant of the Western medical Practice, but I am even more proud to be an Alternative health care Provider and I will do my very best to help these people that I already love so much. I am so honored to be in the business of assisting others on their paths to wellness. More upon my return.

It has no reported side effects.
We here at Acupuncture Plus Massage were the first in the health care field to bring laser to Hernando County. We have been using low level laser since 2002 with incredibly powerful results!
Low level laser therapy is a sterile, painless, drug-free treatment which is used to treat a variety of pain syndromes, wounds, soft tissue injury, fractures, and neurological pathologies. The laser can be used over acupuncture points in place of needles when appropriate. It is often used on patients who could benefit from acupuncture , but may have a phobia about the use of needles and also is used on children who may not be able to lie still for needle insertion.

How Does Laser Light Heal?

Low level lasers supply energy to the body in the form of non-thermal photons of light. Light is transmitted through the skin layers at all wavelengths in the visible range. When low level laser light penetrate the skin they optimize the immune responses of our blood. This has both anti-inflammatory and immune stimulant effects.

Tissue Effects

There are four main effects of LLLT specifically: wound healing, decrease in inflammation, decrease in pain and immunoregulation.

I have seen amazing results over the past 7 years with the use of laser and I am happy to offer it here at Acupuncture Plus for a nominal fee to my patients. If you have any questions about LLLT please contact our office for further information. Thank You!! Susan L. Phillips A.P., D.O.M.

Everyone is asking what’s the link between Massage and Acupuncture? OK. let’s talk about it. I have discovered after many years of being involved in both modalities what the big deal is. Acupuncture works by clearing energy along lines called channels and rebalances organ systems. In Chinese Medicine our goal is to find out where the body is deficient and to restore it. It is also our job to look at where the body may be in excess and to reduce those excesses, so you see it really is a balancing act.

Stress, poor diet, overworking, exposure to environmental toxins can have damaging long term affects. Injury, emotional and or physical, can cause severe stagnation in various parts of the body. If an area of the body stagnates too long any number of disease processes can be set up.

Massage disperses stagnation in three ways

1- It improves lymphatic drainage allowing the body to purge toxins and decreases congestion in the tissues.

2- It increases blood circulation which not only detoxifies but improves tissue oxygenation. More oxygen speeds the healing process on all levels.

3- It soothes the Nervous System which is responsible for many functions in our body and when over stimulated, gets out of balance very quickly.

THE POINT TO ALL OF THIS?

Acupuncture and Massage work in conjunction to relieve pain and heal illness more effectively when used together. I like my patients to get a 30 minute massage before each acupuncture treatment. I also recomment in certain circumstances a 1 hour massage on a weekly basis. Every situation is different. Each pateint is an amazing and unique individual. Come and see us at Acupuncture Plus Massage and let us set up a treatment plan to facilitate your journey to Wellness

It has been all over the news Yes the USPSTF, has recommended changes for Breast Cancer Screenings. Before we go any further….lets talk about who is the USPSTF. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), first convened by the U.S. Public Health Service in 1984, and since 1998 sponsored by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), is the leading independent panel of private-sector experts in prevention and primary care. The USPSTF conducts rigorous, impartial assessments of the scientific evidence for the effectiveness of a broad range of clinical preventive services, including screening, counseling, and preventive medications. Its recommendations are considered the “gold standard” for clinical preventive services. If you go over to the web site and view who is on this Task Force, you cannot help but walk away quite impressed.

So now that we know who is making these recomendations lets look at what they say is not working.

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, or USPSTF, has updated its recommendations for breast cancer screening with some significant changes, including a recommendation against routine screening mammography for women ages 40-49 who aren’t at increased risk for breast cancer. The USPSTF also recommended a switch from annual to biennial screening mammography in women ages 50-74, with the intent of reducing the potential harms of screening by nearly half. The task force’s statement was published Nov. 17 in the Annals of Internal Medicine. The same issue includes a study that concluded that biennial screening intervals “are more efficient and provide a better balance of benefits and harms than annual intervals.”

In another major change, the USPSTF now recommends against clinicians teaching women how to perform breast self-examination. In its 2002 recommendations, the task force had concluded that evidence was insufficient to recommend for or against teaching or performing self-examination. Finally the USPSTF sites possible harm that can affect all age groups include false-positive test results, overdiagnosis and unnecessary earlier treatment, USPSTF members said. However, false-positive results are more common among women ages 40-49 than those in older age groups. The AAFP’s Commission on Health of the Public and Science is reviewing the evidence and recommendations for all of the task force recommendations regarding breast cancer screening.

So now we basically know who this counsel is and the recomendation changes and WHY.

As a Breast Cancer survivor myself, I have great interest in this news, my vote is yet out on whether I agree with it or not. My experience with detection was this, I had a mammogram 4 months prior to finding my own lump. So do I think mammography works, well it did not for me, it has however for some.

My further concerns are this….if we are not doing mammography or self test then what are we doing to detect BC ? If this counsel has the influence that it appears to have, how is this going to affect insurance coverage ? Finally is this a women’s issue ?

I plan on spending the next few weeks understanding further what this decision will mean to all of us. As I find out more options and thoughts, I will share them here, hopefully we can have some good discussions on what this means to all of us and how we can ban together to figure out how to stay healthy and to continue to work toward preventative care.

THESE ARE THE FACTS

According to the American Cancer Society, one out of eight women will be diagnosed with some type of breast cancer, during their lifetime. Breast cancer is the second most common form of cancer in women, in the United States. (The number one form is skin cancer.) It is estimated that almost 200,000 women have been or will be diagnosed with breast cancer, this year alone. Over 40,000 women will die, from this disease. Breast cancer is a heterogeneous disease. What does this mean? Simply stated, it means that the disease is different and progresses differently in every woman, who has been diagnosed with it. Studies have shown that this form of cancer is actually much more aggressive in the majority of younger women and these statistics have not changed in over 20 yrs.

This weekend Dr. Philips is in Gainsville FL studying about Breast Cancer and Acupuncture. It will be interesting to hear her view when she comes back to us here in Spring Hill because you just know there will be lots of thoughts about these new recommendations. This will also produce some interesting posts regarding acupuncture and its role in cancer. Stay tuned, stay educated and most of all stay opinionated.

The biggest problem with the U.S Health -Care System is that it has long been designed to respond to illness rather than prevent it. When we do get a cancer evaluation, too often it is a diagnosis of advanced disease that has spread beyond the intial tumor site. This “seek and destroy” method of treatment has done nothing to eliminate or to even reduce the incidence of disease.

Medical Infrared Thermal Imaging makes a FIRST GLANCE possible, offering the best and possibly only chance for prevention.

How is Thermography different ?

Thermography does not see cancer. Thermography has the unique ability to safely and reliably capture the metabolic energy created by the processes supporting the growing colonies. This allows the opportunity to interrupt the process that supports disease.

Thermography is not designed to replace mamography rather it offers a completely different reality. It is the most advanced tool we have available today to warn us that a suspicious process is developing.

Not to worry Thermography is safe, effective and affordable and a completely pain free method. In fact Medical Infrared Thermal Imaging was recognized by the FDA over 20 years ago as a completely safe method for Breast Imaging. There is no contact with the body and the procedure is free of any harmful side affects.

Thermography adds a new dimension to patient care with attention to preventative screening plus a proactive strategy for quality of life and peace of mind.
